To solve the problem will be analyzed modern experimentalmethods of research and theoretical description of fatigue damage in the early stages of fatigue (incubation and growth of short cracks), the necessary improvements to existing equipment for the possibility of experimental tracking of the early stages of fatigue in steels and alloys, carried out such experiments for constant and variables modes of cyclic loading and the laws of accumulation of fatigue damage in these modes are established. Summarizing the methods for describing these stages in literary sources and having their own approaches to such a description at constant load amplitudes, methods for assessing fatigue damage and durability of metallic materials for variable load amplitudes will be developed and tested on the experimental data obtained. The implementation of the general plan of research presented will enable to obtain results for making significant corrections to the methods of assessing fatigue damage and the resource of structural elements for operating modes of cyclic loading, and thus, based on modern treatments of the stage of the fatigue process, improve methods for calculating the durability of structural elements.
