The most important problem in the polar regions is the nature and direction of global climate change and its forecast for the near future. Understanding the causes and mechanisms of long-term changes in the environment is based on paleoclimatic reconstructions, the main sources of which are changes in the chemical composition of the atmosphere, the concentration of atmospheric aerosols in ice and snow, lithological and mineralogical composition of bottom sediments and biological residues used to determine sedimentation conditions. geological time, bioproductivity, fluctuations in the level of the oceans and ice cover of the Southern Ocean.
