Due to the exceedingly long timescales of SMBH binary mergers, it is justified to assume that the host galaxy of a SMBH binary may experience another merger during the lifetime of the binary. Thus, it is expected that triple SMBH systems may form in this scenario. This was recently confirmed in the first observation of a triple system in NGC 6240.
