This study focuses on the distribution of carbon isotopes in aquatic ecosystems in Kyiv and the surrounding region. It emphasises the so-called 'reservoir effect', which is a shift in carbon isotope content relative to background levels. This shift is caused by local biochemical processes and anthropogenic factors that influence carbon exchange in aquatic environments. The project involves researching the open water ecosystems within Kyiv city and the surrounding region. Analysing the reservoir effect in these ecosystems will help to identify spatial patterns in carbon isotope distribution, assess the impact of natural and human factors on its dynamics and determine potential sources of pollution. The reservoir effect can lead to false 'ageing' of organic samples in radiocarbon analysis, which complicates the accurate interpretation of ecological processes. The project also aims to create a database of radiocarbon analysis results for biota. This will enable long-term monitoring of water bodies, evaluation of pollution sources and their nature, and improvements to the accuracy of chronological reconstructions. popup.nrat_date 2025-07-03 Close
