It is precisely the non-equilibrium nature of the generated plasma that makes this type of discharge an effective source of chemically active species, since the energy introduced into the discharge is predominantly expended in inelastic collisions of electrons with gas molecules. As a result, up to 90% of such collisions lead to the formation of molecules in excited states, the relaxation of which results in the dissociation either of the molecule itself or of other molecules upon collisions, producing chemically active radicals. The possibility of controlling discharge conditions in order to increase the average electron energy will allow an increase in the production rate of active species. The electron energy during plasma formation depends on the mechanism by which electrical breakdown of the gas occurs. Electrons possess a higher average energy when plasma formation proceeds via the propagation of an ionization wave, such as during the motion of the head of a cathode-directed streamer or during the propagation of the ionization wave in the first Trichel pulse. popup.nrat_date 2026-01-28 Close
