Purpose of the work: 1. Experimental study of possibilities of using thymic preparations for immunorehabilitation under conditions of thyroidectomy, I-131 incorporation, and X-ray irradiation. 2. Study of the features of immune status in children and adults with thyroid tumors. Methods of investigation: immunological, virologic, biochemical, cytological, radioisotopic analysis, and radioimmunoassay. Equipment: laminar boxes, microscopes, thermostat, centrifuge, beta- and gamma-counters, and other. It has been studied endocrine function of thymus; production of cytokins: gamma-interferon, interleukin-1 and interleukin-2; activity of natural killer cells and T- lymphocyte suppressors; content of circulating immune complexes. For the first time thymic preparations (thymostimulin, tactivin and thymogen) have been used with the purpose of rehabilitati on of immune status in the presence of internal irradiation with 131I , X-ray irradiation, and after thyroidectomy. Optimum doses and scheme of using thymic preparations have been experimentally grounded. It has been shown that after immunotherapy the status of immune system significantly improved.Therapeutic effect depended on the type of immunomodulator and basal level of a concrete immunologic indicator. In thyroidectomized mice renewal of thyroid hormone deficiency significantly increases the immunotherapeutic effect of thymic preparations. Immunological studies have been carried out in 369 patients (246 adults and 123 children) with thyroid tumors. Changes in immune status of patients were observed both in case of benign and malignant tumors. The degree, range and duration of immunological disturbances were greater in case of thyroid carcinomas and depended on the presence and localization of metastases. Surgical intervention leads to an additional decrease of immune functions. The results of research al low making a comparative analysis of immune status indicators that selectively influence the development of benign and malignant thyroid tumors, and reveal in experiment the possibilities of using thymic preparations with the purpose of immunotherapy. The present work gives new approaches for treatment of immunodeficiency in the presence of thyroid pathology.Fields of application: experimental and clinical endocrinology, immunology, and radiobiology.
