Investigations were based on unified methods discussed in the created Programme. Biodiversity of bird species as a well-studied biological group was within the scope of monitoring. "Integral Scheme of Ecological Evaluation of Wetland Ornithocomplexes" was elaborated. A plan of wetland description - "Wetland Passport" was created in accordance with the international criterions. "Programme and Action Plan for Waterbird Monitoring in the Azov-Black Sea Region of the Ukraine" was developed, published in English and recommended as a framework for scientific wetland surveys in all countries of the Black Sea basin. Present publication was supported by the Wetlands International-AEME. General parameters of seasonal distribution of birds, species composition of vegetation and other key components of biota were determined as well as qualitative characteristics of factors that have influence on the wetland compo nents. Total list of the most important wetlands where plan investigations have been undertaken consists of 16 waterbodies. About 80% of waterbird breeding complexes are connected with these wetlands. These areas are also key sites in bird distribution during the other seasons. Total numbers of breeding waterbirds are determined in wetlands of the southern Ukraine. These are 372-420 thousands of birds in different years. More than 3 millions of birds are concentrated in this area during the migration period.
