The aim of work: - establishment of a complex technology of spongy titanium production - smelting of high quality titanium ingots with improved technical-and-economic indices of metal production. The methods of investigations: - experimental and technological investigations, engineering developments, chemical and spectral analysis. The main concept of the project is usage of spongy titanium with chlorine content up to 1% mass. for smelting titanium ingots of high quality in induction furnaces with a sectional mould. The increase of chlorine content in spongy titanium permitted to improve the quality of spongy titanium as to oxygen, nitrogen and iron content and at the same time to reduce the cost of sponge due to reduction of process duration, electric power and materials expenses, increase of equipment and labour productivity. The perfo r mance of the technological tests resulted in optimization of the process of spongy titanium production with a controlled chlorine content up to 1.0% and of the process of its smelting into the ingots of high quality in induction furnaces with a sectional mould. The investigations of the electrolytic refining of titanium optimized the process conditions of highly refined titanium production. Low-grade spongy titanium with high content of impurities was used for production of highly refined electrolytic titanium. The possibility for further refining of electrolytic titanium (up to 99.99%) by electron-beam melting under high vacuum was shown. The field of application: - the results of work will be used during technical re-equipment of spongy titanium production at Zaporozhye Titanium and Magnesium Plant and during the establishment of pilot-industrial production of high-purity titanium at Zaporozhye Metallurgical Pilot Plant.
