Reactions of these compounds with nitrogen nucleophiles have been studied. New tetracyclic derivatives of b-carboline with aryl, aralkyl and styril substituents have been synthesized. Modification of neuroprotecting agent, carbacetam, gives rise to a number of b-carboline derivatives as potential biologically active compounds.
