The aim of the research is to define and describe the active lexico-phraseological processes based on vernacular material collected from the east of Ukraine in the ethno-cultural aspect. In the course of research, the methods of the investigation of culture-national semantics and the dynamics of the regional lexemes and phrasemes were detailed. The interaction between the linguistic and extra-linguistic factors was analyzed. As a result of the research one hundred twenty thousand dialectal units of lexical and phraseological levels were collected and systemized for the first time in the history of Ukrainian linguistics. The phraseological dictionary of the Ukrainian language was published in 1998. This dictionary contained approximately 2,500 expressions. In addition two other books were also published-the textbook "Patterns of the Na tive Language" (1999), and the third edition of the phraseological dictionary of the East Sloboda and Steppe dialects of Donbas (2000). This second phraseological dictionary contained 3,522 phrases and expressions. Forty-five dialectical maps of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions have been prepared for future publication. Undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate theses were written based on the material compiled as a result of the research. The Department held scientific conferences and seminars. A Candidate's dissertation was defended earlier and two more are currently being prepared for defense. The Department, in cooperation with scholars from the Institute of Slavic Studies, located in Griveswald, Germany, has begun to compile a fundamental etymological phraseological dictionary of the Ukrainian language.
