The aim of the project is the comprehensive study of localisation sites of exchange cations in the structure of mineral ion exchanges and the energetics of the interaction of these cations with mineral matrix and water molecules. The methods employed in the studies are the direct precise adsorption-calorimetric measurements of small heats of ion exchange and quantum chemical calculations of energetic and structural characteristics of ion exchanger crystal structure in the presence of exchange cations and hydration shell. The main results of the study are the elucidation of ion-exchange properties and memory effect observed in natural ion exchangers, in particular, in iow-siloceous (calcium) and high-siliceous (sodium) clinoptilolites. The results of the studies can be implemented in the ion exchange and environment protection technologies.
