Object of investigation: Chernobyl liquidators (CL) and exposed population in 7 regions of Ukraine. Aim of SRI - analysis of collected data, second round of examination of 12000 CL and exposed population, on the basis of case-control study developing a technique for cataract prognosis in workers, which were exposed to professional ionizing radiation. Methods and apparatus: the standard methods of complex hygienic, ophthalmologic, and epidemiological research of cohort of CL were implemented in 7 regions of Ukraine. On the basis of Institute for Occupational Health and with involving of 14 ophthalmologists in collaboration with the specialists of Center for Eye Microsurgery of MPH a quality control of standard examination was provided. The results of dose reconstruction were evaluated in external irradiation dosimetry laboratory of USCRM. The lenses of 11797 persons were examined. 11403 CL were second time examined using special equipment for further estimation of eye transparency changes dynamics depending from the dose of exposure. On the base of developed classification the system for examination and diagnostics of lens transparency was implemented. Specialists of Center for Eye Microsurgery operated 564 persons with second and higher stages of cataract, which was caused by ionizing radiation. During the operations their lenses were withdrawn and put into tissue and data banks. The draft Decree of MPH of Ukraine "About introduction of cataract diagnostic criterions for preliminary and periodic ophthalmologic examinations of atomic energy workers" was worked up, discussed and approved on the Problem commission "Professional Diseases and Occupational Hygiene". This document was published as a Decree № 322 from 06.08.01. Besides, in 1999 year a monograph "Ocular Radiation Risk Assessment in Populations Exposed to Environmental Radiation Contamination" was published. In that monograph the recommendations regarding conducting methods of such studies were published.
