It is demonstrated that the contribution of extrasynaptic NMDA receptors into synaptic events is enhanced after high-frequency stimulation of inputs to CA1 area. These receptors have been shown to have higher sensitivity to ifenprodil, a selective blocker of NMDA receptors, containing NR2B subunits.
