Approach proposed enables not only to explain general regularities of metal grading as "ductile" and "brittle" but also to establish those main characteristics of structural steels, which predetermine the level of steel toughness taking into account its loading conditions. It is demonstrated that the level of toughness is specified by such sensitive-to-structure characteristics as microcleavage resistance, yield strength, strain hardening index. Parametric approach suggested is suitable tool for further detailed investigation of the phenomenon of change in metal mechanical state on different scale levels, namely, on macro-, microscopic and atomic level.
