The purpose of this work was to investigate the influence of combined stage-by-stage saturation by nitrogen and carbon on the structure, phase composition and properties of diffusion layers formed in iron alloys containing Ti and Cr, the carbon concentration distribution as well as establishing of the mechanism of diffusion zone structure formation. The investigations were carried out by means of metallography, electron microscopy, autoradiography and microhardness test. The structure of diffusion layers in the iron alloys with titanium and chromium after combined stage-by-stage saturation by nitrogen and carbon was studied. The mechanism of diffusion zone structure formation under combined stage-by-stage saturation of the iron alloys with titanium and chromium by nitrogen and carbon was proposed. The increase of rate of carbon diffusion in a-solid solution after nitriding stageat 923-973 К as compare to non-nitrided a-phase was established by autoradiography method (radioactive tracers). The possibility of diffusion zone properties (in particular, microhardness) formation vs. depth by changing the process parameters of combined stage-by-stage saturation: stages duration, their temperature, sequence and time interval of change from one stage to next one, was shown.
