Sci Ukraine popup.description2 The rough dementia prevalence coefficient for inhabitants of Kiev aged 60 years and over is 10.4% that fits the data of (a number of) many countries of the world. The results obtained testify that the age constitutes one of the key factors contributing to the dementia onset. The most commonly occurring form of dementia among older individuals is the neurodegenerative (Alzheimer's type) and vascular dementias. When analyzing the data on the cognitive status of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VD), it has been found that cognitive deficit formation has definite specificities depending on the character of dominant process - neurodegenerative or vascular. One of the main current hypothesis of development of dementia, specifically AD, is the cholinergic hypothesis. The use of donepezil hydrochloride (acetyl cholinesterase inhibitor) in AD patients has demonstrated its positive effect on the general health condition and on the cognitive and behavioral indices.
