We have found that (i) the lateral flux of oxygen is the main reason for the presence of the suboxic layer; (ii) the intensity of ventilation and the export production are the primary control on the thickness of the suboxic zone; (iii) the lateral influx of oxygen results in oxidation almost 70% of the total vertical flux of sulfide inside the anoxic zone, while 25% of that flux is oxidized by sinking oxide-hydroxides of Mn(III, IV) at the onset of sulphide.
