Several models of spackle noise and its statistics have been considered. Using these models we have proposed formulas for the values of the thresholds that are used in filters based on one-dimensional and two-dimensional wavelet transforms. A comparison of the traditional Lee and Kuan filters to the wavelet-based filters has been carried out. Speckle noise removal on real radar images obtained with an airborne synthetic aperture radar have been performed as well. It has been found that wavelet-based filters allow removing speckle noise in a great extent while maintaining sharp edges and image elements in non-homogeneous regions.
