Iron sulphate caused a shortening of lag-phase of E.coli growth and enchanced cell division. Iron ions resulted in oxidation of cell proteins and lipids and stimulated antioxidant enzyme activation in vivo. In model objects iron ions led to cell protein carbonilation which may be a reason of inactivation of some antioxidant enzymes probably due to hydroxyl radical generation in the Fenton reaction that is catalyzed by iron ion. It has been studied properties and physiological functions of heme-contained enzyme catalase in bacteria, yeast and animals. It was concluded that this enzyme protects cell proteins against oxidative damage and its function may be only partially compensated by other antioxidant mechanisms.
