Karazin popup.description2 The research project is concerned with ionospheric electrodynamics at middle latitudes during global-scale disturbances caused by discrete energy injections of sufficiently great power. The research project aims at developing models for revealing atmosphere-ionosphere electrodynamic coupling mechanisms in the presence of external high-power disturbances, and at upgrading radio techniques for their probing. The research project applies methods of aeronomy, cosmic electrodynamics, random signal processing, and the partial reflection (MF radar) technique, the high-frequency Doppler probing technique, satellite radio beacon observations, the ionosonde technique, as well as the corresponding radio facilities. Analytical space and time-dependent models for the perturbations in the lower ionospheric parameters due to precipitating energetic particles and chemical reagent of different type releases in the upper atmosphere have been developed. Electric fields have been estimated from the analysis of the results obtained via radio sounding of anthropogenic enhancements in the electron density. Making use of the concept of the mesosphere as an active element in the global electric circuit, a model has been developed, for the first time, for electrodynamic coupling between the large mesospheric electric fields and the ionospheric plasma. For the first time, a technique has been suggested and tested for remote sensing mesospheric electricity features and ionospheric perturbations due to these large electric fields. A technique has been developed for determining the frequency of high-power radio emissions optimal in terms of minimizing both linear and non-linear absorption in the lower ionosphere, which allows the energetics of high-power HF communication and dedicated to ionospheric studies transmitters to be lowered. The suggested techniques also accounts for the effects due to large mesospheric electric fields, which increase the value of the optimal frequencies. The results of the project have found applications for the development of and refinement in methods for global-scale and regional-scale monitoring of near-earth space and will be implemented in the MF radar world net, for developing a model of atmosphere-ionosphere-magnetosphere coupling during disturbed conditions, and in education. The research project results have been included in two doctoral and one Ph.D. dissertations, and published in twenty-three papers and presentations on scientific conferences.
