Conditions of a high-temperature conversion of aromatic hydrocarbons into onion-like carbon nanostructures were optimized. A new mechanism of the nucleation and growth of both tubular and onion-like forms of carbon was proposed and justified. It is supposed that the growth of the carbon nanostructures by pyrolysis of hydrocarbons proceeds by polycondensating of hydrocarbons molecules as well as intermediate ones formed during the pyrolysis.
