Subject of investigation - creation of sweet pepper varieties Lada and Veleten. Aim of the work - to create early ripening cold-hardened varieties and hybrids, resistant to wilting and virus diseases for the Forest Steppe of Ukraine. Methods of investigation - hybridization in combination with selection during the whole breeding process. In the result of the fulfilled work at the laboratory in 2002-2005 there are created and given to the State Comission for Testing and Protection of Plant Varieties 2 heterotic hybrids - Nika, Zlagoda and a white-fruited variety Valiusha. There are given to UNPGRC two lines: Rodzinka 359-an early ripening, cold-hardened, tolerant to fusarial wilt one; Line 356 - an early ripening, cold-hardened, tolerant to fusarial wilt one and varieties Lada and Veleten are prepared for being registration given. The new varieties are notable for their variety type and group of ripening. The variety Lada is early-ripening, it has right-angled and trapeziform fruits with thick flesh and dense wall, the colour is light-green and bright-red, their position is mixed; the fruit keeps commercial appearance on the bush for a long time. During testing years the yield for the first gathering was 14.5-18,4 t/ha, the total one - 25-28 t/ha. The vegetative period is 82-117 days. A fruit mass is 82-105 g. The content of general sugar is 3.1-3.3 %, vitamin С - 13.5-220.0 mg/%. The variety Veleten is middle-ripening, it goes to the cubiform dark-green droop variety type. The vegetative period to the industrial maturity is 103-125 days. The bush is compact, bole with big dark-green leaves. The fruit is square, its mass is 110-250 g, the colour is dark-green and dark-red, the wall of the flesh is thick; the variety is suitable for one-time gathering, positively responds to fertilization. The yield during testing years was 35-40 t/ha, for the first gathering - 13.9-22.5 t/ha. The fruits keep commercial appearance on the bush for a long time. The variety can give high yields under the conditions of the sheltered ground.
