Coalification processes resulted in transformation buried organic matter of herbal origin into coal and gas hydrocarbons. With the help of modeling vitrinite reflectance trends method in the SE and Сentral Donbas there have been revealed the sites with abnormal heat flows (125…200 mW/m2), which formation took place in the conditions of local extension during postinversion stage. On the background of the analysis of results of fission-track data and modeling of thermotectonic regimes with rejecting of statistically non-reasonable scenarios the temporal frame of "postinversion thermal event" has been inferred (the Pfalzian stage of Hercynian orogenic cycle, ~250 Ma). On the background of the new developed conception of tectonic evolution of the Donbas the geological aspects of gas generation, migration, preservation and typology of pre- and postinversion traps havebeen detailed. The conclusion about high prospective potential to prospect voluminous methane deposits in the regions wherein the postinversion thermal event and secondary methane generation took place is formulated.
