These merocyanines absorb and emit light in the spectral region close to that of the corresponding symmetric carbocyanines, unlike the cyanine bases and hydroxystyryls. The effect caused on their spectral properties by electron-donor end groups is also much the same as for symmetric cyanines. As retinal models, a number of 5-aryl substituted 2,4-pentadienals have been obtained and then converted into the Schiff bases so as to study their photochemical reactions. The quantum chemical calculations of electronic and spectral properties have been performed for some of the compounds synthesized in the framework of the long-chain approximation and the AM1 method.
