These reactions were used to synthesize monosquaraines and long-wavelength squaraine dyes. Influence of substituents in the squaric ring on the spectral properties of the squaraines in aqueous and non-aqueous media but also in biological systems were studied. New luminophores that were prototypes of effective biomedical probes and labels were synthesized.
