It is shown, that an active particle in reactions of hydrocarbons in a gas phase and in a water solution are the OH-radicals formed at homolytic dissociation of peroxynitrous acid. Kinetics, substrate selectivity and activation parameters of reactions of benzene and alkylbenzenes with the metavanadic acid in sulfuric acid solution have been studied. It is shown, that an active particle is vanadium dioxоcations; the reaction is determined by the arene ionization potential.
