A number of new fused heterocycles have been synthesized which contain a dihydrofuran ring exerting a stronger effect on PD colour than an alkoxy group. New regularities have been found for the properties of PDs derived from dioxa- and oxaazaborine complexes. Squaraines have been found to aggregate more readily than pentamethinecyanines.
