We can understand interrelations and interactions of tribes mainly against the background of archaeological materials as written sources are mostly absent. Reconstructing ethnic history by archaeological sources makes a fundamental scholarly problem with some of its aspects not studied and some even not formulated. The study of two archaeological two sites by a team from V.I.Vernadski Taurida National University (TNU) provides new opportunity to solve the above problem. The excavations in Neyzats necropolis have studied 323 grave constructions from the second to the fourth century AD that contained an extremely large number of grave goods from the Sarmatians and the forefathers of medieval Alans, who migrated to the Crimea from North Caucasus. It would not be an exaggeration to say that no European necropolis of the Early Iron Age supplies so mucharchaeological material of various types as Neyzats does. The necropolis of Opushki has not been studied enough yet. Although the excavations discovered only 41 grave constructions from the first century BC to the fourth century AD, this site's unique feature is actually understandable. The excavations of Opushki necropolis have unearthed striking assemblages of four cultures: Late Scythian, Sarmatian, German, and Alan. The materials from Neyzats and Opushki are much more abundant than those obtained by excavations in all other necropoleis in the Crimea. They allow us to study ethnical processes in the Crimea with participation of many different ethnoi, as well as to reconstruct some general patterns that were typical for interrelation of ancient tribes.
