The purposes of the study are: clearing out how features of reading of foreign literature depend on mentality of Ukrainian reader; exposure of specific traits of present “situation of reading” as well as studying how different narrative strategies determine pecularities of reception of literal works. During the condaction of research there have been used system approach and complex analysis, method of sociological enquiries as well as analysis and synthesis, analogy, comparison, typological analysis, observation. Novelty of the investigation consists in the usage for it of the problem of ‘mentality’ of such kind of human activity as reading with a view of determining the features of reception by different categories of readers. The question of influence of the mentality on the character of reading has still got a very littlecoverage; therefore the research of this sociocultural phenomenon is actual and important scientific problem. The results of the research work can be used for further studying of the Ukrainian reader and his mentality in relation to his literary preferences, in comparative scientific works, as well as in preparation of courses of studies history in literature of bachelor's and master's university programs. Practical recommendations for librarians and lecturers can be worked out the basis of the work. The results of the research work were used in the development of such special courses as: ‘A Reader and Problems of Perception of Foreign Literature’, ‘Literature and Myth’, ‘Sociocultural Aspects of Literary Process’. The materials of the research work are used in the preparation of course pages, bachelor's works and degree works, Candidate's dissertations.
