During the course of compiling the National (State) Standard Project it has been: - identified technical requirements for seedlings of tree and shrub plants from different forest and plant zones in Ukraine; - studied and generalized biometrical indexes (such as a stem diameter on a root collar, a height of a stem, a length of a root system) for the coniferous and deciduous seedlings from different forest and plant zones in Ukraine, i.e. Polissia, Forest Steppe, Steppe, the Ukrainian Carpathians with near vicinities and the Crimea with near vicinities based on a lot of experimental planting material;- designed technical requirements for the main forest and decorative aboriginal and introduced tree and shrub species.In terms of technical requirements for seedlings of tree and shrub plants it is an essential matter to elaborate the National Standards of Ukraine in the silvicultural field for reforestation, cultivation of forest trees, and landscaping activities. The last issue in the section (State Standard of USSR # 3317-90) was published by the State Committee of the former Soviet Union in 1991. Moreover, biometric characteristics of the planting material mentioned there are a bit generalized and are not in compliance with the forest and plant zones applicable in Ukraine.Taking into consideration the above mentioned points the elaboration of the National Standards is an urgent subject matter for those who work within the forest sector in Ukraine. The purpose and the goal of the standard elaboration is to regulate use of standard planting material of tree and shrub plants that are grown in a transplant nursery for cultivation, shelter stands, and landscaping activities.
