Using powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction the crystal structures for 47 compounds were determined; 9 of them represent new structure types of inorganic compounds: La7Ni2Zn, Ce20Mg19Zn81, Mg2FeGa3, Sm2Mn3Bi6, Gd6Zn1+xSb14, Li12Cu16+xAl26-x, x=3,2, Li4Cu6+xAl3-x, x=1,16, Li12Cu13Al14, Li1.25Ti2Sb. The hydrogen absorption properties of LaNi4.8M0.2 (M = Mg, Bi, Sb) and the effect of nickel substitution in the LaNi5 compound with Mg, Bi and Sb were investigated. Generally it was determined that partial substitution of Ni in LaNi5 with Mg, Bi and Sb causes insignificant changes of hydrogen storage capacity compared to the hydrogen content in the initial LaNi5H6 hydride phase. However, it is worth to stress that in the case of LaNi4.8Bi0.2 a small increase of H/f.u. up to 6.8 is observed. The obtained results indicate that the LaNi4.8M0.2 (M = Al, Mg and Bi) alloys can be promising electrode materials for metalhydride batteries. As anode materials for lithium batteries ternary phases of the Li-Cu-Al and Li-Ag-Sb systems were tested.Besides structural and electrochemical studies basic physical properties such as magnetization and magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, electro- and thermal conductivity were investigated and the electron structure calculations were carried out for 40 compounds.
