Karazin popup.description2 Wistar male rats of 3-, 24- and 30-32-month old, which were exposed to stress (ethanol) or hormonal influences (melatonin) and animals treated by quercetin, fish oil or beef oil, and liver, kidney, diaphragm, brain cortex and hippocampus, exposed to insulin were the objects of the research. Spectrophotometric, radioisotope, electro-physiological and chromatographic methods were used in the work. It has been determined that cardiolipin content decreased in the heart and liver of the 30-32-month old rats as compared with the 3- and 24-month-old animals. It is established also, that long-term self stimulation of brain increased the horizontal movement, research activity and emotional state of old rats. The melatonin administration to the old rats nullified the increased level of emotional activity of these animals. Long- and short-term administration of the ethanol to the young animals was accompanied by the senescence-like changes of glycerolipid and sphingolipid metabolism in the heart, kidney, brain cortex and hippocampus. It has been determined that the quercetin and fish oil n-3 fatty acids could be used for the biologically active lipids turnover improvement at old age and under stress conditions. It has been determined that exogenous ceramide, palmitic acid and saturated dietetic fat induced senescence-like ceramide accumulation, decreased the insulin-induced phospholipase D activity and disturbed the glucose uptake by the target-tissues of the young animals. The results obtained demonstrated that the ceramide accumulation in the target tissues at old age and under stress condition could disturb insulin signaling via phospholipase D-dependent pathway.
