It was discovered by Polish archaeologist A. Cynkalowski and since the year 1937 was excavated by Eneolithic expedition of IHMC RASci (IIMK RAN). In course of 2005-2007 the settlement was investigated by the joint Ukrainian-Russian expedition supported by the grant provided by RGNF-NANU and leaded by N.N. Skakun (Russian side) and E.V. Tsvek (Ukrainian side). The rise of this settlement on extreme North-West of cultural entity in area rather remote of contemporaneous Trypolian objects is conditioned by the richness of this territory in outcrops of high-quality flints which still played important role in Eneolithic economy. Abundance of flint items, their composition embraced cores, wastes, blanks and finished tools, recovery of intentionally arranged working platforms and workshops unique by the abundance of finds, - all these witness for the significance of flint-working manufacture and high level of its organisation among local Eneolithic tribes. Products made of Volhynian flints were transported both into many areas of Tripolye-Cucuteni mega-entity and into areas of neighboring contemporaneous cultures. Traces of numerous cultural ties are also recovered within the pottery complex where signs inherent for both Western cultures of Poland and Hungary and cultures of early nomads of Lower Dnieper are revealed. Due to the perennial studies conducted at Bodaki the layout of the settlement was elucidated and localization of living and manufacturing objects, as well as blank areas was recognized. The problems concerning house-building patterns represent one of the actual issues of home and foreign archaeology. The question of studies of constructional objects of Trypolian entity is especially controversial. Recovering of specific constructions with deepened segments at Bodaki settlement will redound to solution of certain aspects of these debates. Essential interest represents the ditch encircling the settlement of Bodaki from the plain field area. This ditch - to the date almost completely excavated - currently is the sole known in given area of Trypolian entity; therewith this construction was recovered in the context of economically specialized settlement. Deciphering of its designation is highly potential both for the characterization of phenomenon of settlement-workshop in frames of Trypolian settlement system, and for the elucidation of interrelations of its inhabitants with population of neighboring communities. Monographic volume devoted to the settlement of Bodaki with its manufacturing flint workshops and unique fortification constructions represents essential contribution into studies on history and palaeoeconomy of early farming population of Europe.
