It was shown that the gastric cancer of intestinal type progresses mostly due to increase in tissue atypia, and the progression of the cancer of diffuse type is due to an increase in cellular atypia. In our research, a wide range of numbers of functionally active vessels with active endothelial alkaline phosphatase was found, including critically low values. On the contrary, the number of vessels stained with CD31 and CD34 was significantly higher. The specific functional status of malignant cells, morphological and functional characteristics of cancer vascularity, identified by histochemical and immunohistochemical methods, may be used as an additional criteria to predict biological behavior of gastric cancer, and serve as a target for anticancer therapy.
