The theory and methods of micro- and nanoindentation for investigation of the mechanical behavior of new materials which are low-ductile or brittle in mechanical tensile tests (quasicrystal, metallic glasses, intermetallic compounds) and thin low-ductile coatings were elaborated. Theoretical and methodical developing made it possible to determine general mechanical characteristics for new materials and coatings in the different structural states by indentation. The series of fundamental aspects of deformation and fracture of low-ductile and brittle materials and also new theoretical ideas about mechanism of local deformation by nanoindentation were established.
