Dniestr-Desna: the comparative analysis popup.stage_title Head Kulakovs'ka Larysa Vitaliivna, Registration Date 27-02-2010 Organization Institute of Archaeology National Ukrainian Acadamy of Sciences popup.description2 Two large regions exist in the Upper Palaeolithic of Ukraine: basin Dniester River and Basin of Desna River. The most part of Palaeolithic sites of Right-bank Ukraine is located here. Study and analysis of these sites and their material culture can make following conclusions: Dniester area (or Basin of Dniester River). The earliest Palaeolithic sites here cover to the Middle Palaeolithic (OIS 5-3): Kolodiiv, Ezupol, Molodovo I and V, Ketrosy. Most of them are classified as Levallois-Mousterian. Micoquian industries developed in parallel. The first time for the Middle Palaeolithic the rests of inhabited constructions have been opened in Dniester area. The mammoth was the basic object of hunting. The next chronological stage is the industries of the Aurignacian type. Gravettian and Epigravettian presented in Dniester area most full. They belong to the great chronological period (28-19 thousand years). The bone industry is presented by not utilitarian subjects. Art objects and jewellery is not enough. Remains of dwellings have been discovered. The Rangifer tarandus was the basic object of hunting. Desna area. Middle Palaeolithic presented a small collection gathered on the surface. Preliminary analysis of these materials allows us to speak about the existence here industries with the bifacial technique (Micoquian?). The next stage is industry of Pushkari (more than 19,000 years ago). Sometimes it is called Epigravettian. But, a more detailed analysis of the collection suggests that we are have peculiar industry, which combines features of both Gravettian and the techno-typological characteristic of the industry Radomyshl. Next sites are Epigravettian assemblages in Desna area: Mizyn, Bugorok, Klyusy, Novgorod-Seversky, etc. The most prominent among them is Epigravettian site Mizyn (15-14 thousand years ago.) The remains of dwellings of mammoth bones are preserved in the Upper Palaeolithic sites. In Mizyn found the remains of five dwellings, in Pushkari - three. Moreover, in Pushkari are two types of dwellings: a long dwelling and conventional round dwelling. Bone industry in this area is exceptionally rich: tools made of mammoth tusks and bones, works of art and jewellery. We can say that a Palaeolithic culture in these regions developed differently. It depended to a large extent on weather conditions, objects and methods of hunting.
