It was found that produced multilayered nanocomposites have a hardness which considerably exceeds a similar characteristics of the transition metal nitride single - layered coatings. For example, a multilayered TiN/ZrN nanocomposite deposit has a hardness 45 GPa which in average 2 times higher in comparison with a hardness of the one - layered TiN (23 GPa) and ZrN (21 GPa) deposits of the same total thickness ( 10 microns ). The ternary nitride system multilayered nanocomposites also have a higher hardness in comparison with the analogous characteristic of one - layered nitride coatings on the base of binary titanium alloys. Particularly, the TiN/TiCrN and TiN/TiAlN vacuum - arc coatings with a thickness of individual layers less than 100 nm have a microhardness 40 GPa and 42 GPa respectively which are 1,5 - 1,6 times higher in comparison with a microhardness of the one - layered TiCrN (25 GPa) and TiAlN (28 GPa) deposits. The hardness of these composites is higher or comparable with the hardness of a bulk B4C boron carbide (40 GPa).
