Paton Electric Welding Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description2 We have conducted ground-based retrofitting of equipment for electron beam zone melting (EBZM) under the conditions of microgravity: the working block and control system of the unit for EBZM of materials in space have been developed, degree of vibration of the unit traveling gear and their influence of the structure and electrophysical properties of silicon single-crystals were studied, and technology of EBZ sintering of hypereutectic composites was developed. A remote manipulator was created, "technical vision" system was developed, which eliminates the possibility of the electron beam moving beyond the working zone and hitting the spacesuit or elements of the space vehicle structure; small-sized transformable structures were developed, which are transformed to remove the process and scientific hardware for up to 10 m distance from the outer surface of the space vehicle. Work results will be used for further development of space materials science and space technology. The work can be used in the following fields: optimization of the design of pilot flight unit for EBZM to produce perfect semi-conductor and composite materials in space; performing work on EBZM of silicon and liquid-phase sintering of hypereutectic composites in space; development of electron beam hardware for welding objects in open space, which includes a system of welding operator protection; development of small-sized transformable structures for application on space vehicle outer surface.
