Formation and distribution of AE wave quantums which are closely related to a discrete nature of development and accumulation of damage (defects), was studied. Deformation waves generated at defect propagation in materials were investigated, giving an idea of the extent of material damage and influence of this process on the structure load-carrying capacity. Stressed state of ammonia storage shell due to the action of ammonia solution was studied, allowing for the varying thickness of the plates making up the tank shell, as well as the influence of extreme loads in the form of a layer of snow and wind pressure on the stressed state. It was established that the shape and parameters of AE waves strictly correspond to fracture processes running in the structure material, and provide information on the degree of risk in the region of fracture, and also give an idea of the type and dimensions of the initiating or propagating defects. On the other hand, it becomes possible to avoid the need to determine precise defect dimensions during testing, and just follow the result of negative factor action by the emerging AE elastic wave on the plate surface. A test rig was developed and procedures were optimized for testing large-sized shell structures under the service conditions; software and AE instrumentation designed for automated measurement, preliminary acquisition, processing and storage of AE information, as well as specifying the structure residual life by the results of the performed testing, were improved. Comparative analysis of AE testing instrumentation of various manufacturers in terms of price-quality was made. Analysis was performed of the condition of four ammonia storages (52 m diameter, 21 m height) in Odessa Port Plant and ammonia pipeline in more than 700 m long section of bridge transition across the Dnieper river near Dnipropetrovs'k, which are components of one integrated system of ammonia transportation and storage.
