Encouraging test results stimulated realization of relevant engineering solutions of active flow control using flush-mounted streamwise elements heated (1) resistively with applied voltage or (2) with microwave (MW) radiation. Using 2 test models controlled with different thermal techniques, near-wall velocity fields modified with the imposed thermal fields as well as lift, drag, and pitch moment coefficients were measured. Experimental data are analyzed together with the earlier obtained numerical results. Found correlation between kinematical and integral flow characteristics can result in recommendations about an optimal choice of control parameters depending on flow conditions (basic flow parameters). The total drag can be significantly decreased due to the delayed flow separation; it will be displayed by growing values of lift-to-drag ratio of the model. Application of MW radiation implies multidisciplinary (combined aero- and electro-dynamic) research and, correspondingly, the experiments in a suitable facility with available systems of MW radiation and protection. In this connection, the wind-tunnel complex is supplemented with the integrated data acquisition and processing system which enables automated remote operation. The proposed work is a logical continuation of the projects based on the developed approach to flow control through affecting the fine vortical structure and accounting for physical mechanisms of the flow response to specially organized thermal disturbances.
