Objective: The main objective of the project in general is to assess atmospheric fluxes of nitrogen, phosphorus and sulphur compounds to the Black Sea near Zmiinyi based on observations carried out on the station of background atmosphere monitoring. During the studies standard methods of sampling and analyses of environmental samples were used, recommended in Ukraine and in the EC. Results: Based on the analyses of the European Convention on pollution transport in Europe the main requirements have been formulated to the programme of observation of meteorological and atmospheric and chemical indices in the island atmosphere. Programme of observation of meteorological parameters and chemical composition of atmospheric precipitation and depositions (nitrogen and phosphorus compounds) near the Zmiinyi Island has been developed. Analysis of improved methodology of atmospheric monitoring has been done taking into account experience of the EMEP International Programme. Draft methodologies have been developed: of sampling and preservation of atmospheric precipitation and depositions samples; pH determination in the samples of atmospheric precipitation; determination of conductivity on the samples of atmospheric precipitation and determination of ionic composition of samples of atmospheric precipitation and depositions using IC. Instruments for atmospheric-chemical studies on the Zmiinyi Island and for analyses of samples in the lab have been purchased and introduced. Based on the field surveys data conclusions about efficiency of the new methods and the new equipment for atmospheric monitoring in the Black Sea under conditions of the Zmiinyi Island have been prepared. The staff of the research station in 2008-2009 carried out meteorological observations and sampling of atmospheric depositions and precipitation. Altogether about 30000 meteorological observations have been carried out. Taken and analysed were 40 samples of atmospheric precipitation and 100 samples of atmospheric depositions. Assessment of atmospheric flows of nitrogen, sulphur and phosphorus compounds to the Black Sea water area near the Zmiinyi Island has been done. Recommendations on the studies of the processes of atmospheric pollution transport from the European continent to the Black Sea water area near the Zmiinyi Island have been developed, technical requirements and recommendations formulated on supplying of the station of atmospheric background monitoring with a set of equipment to carry out standard programme of EMEP atmospheric monitoring.
