Objective: development and implementation based on complex studies of means of scientific and methodical provision of functioning of the research station and the system of complex environmental monitoring of the Zmiinyi Island ecosystem. During the studies standard methods of sampling and analyses of environmental samples were used, recommended in Ukraine and in the EC. In the period of final stage fulfillment the observations of physico-chemical and hydrobiological quality elements of the coastal waters of the Zmiinyi Island went on. Results: selection and substantiation of choice of the list of informative indices of the coastal ecosystem state carried out in accordance with the EC Water Framework Directive. Programme of complex ecological studies is developed to investigate the quality of the coastal marine waters. The research station is partially supplied with equipment to study physico-chemical and hydrobiological quality elements of sea water near the Zmiinyi Island. Generalised are the results of physico-chemical and hydrobiological studies and observations, published 10 publications and monograph. Practical recommendations are developed on implementation of the Water Framework Directive methodology into practical environmental monitoring of coastal marine waters. General report has been prepared about the results of surveys in 2008 and 2009 with the results of observation of coastal water quality elements. Equipment has been purchased and introduced for hydrological and hydrochemical studies on the island, for sampling and analyses. Draft methodical recommendations on assessment of coastal water quality in line with the EC Water Framework Directive requirements have been developed and tested. Conclusions about efficiency of the methodical recommendations developed and observation results have been formulated. Programme of technical supply of the research station with modern equipment and boats has been developed. Conclusions about coastal water quality according to the Water Framework Directive requirements have been made. Final report has been prepared. Results of the Physico-chemical and hydrobiological studies and observations have been generalized in 18 publications and monograph "The Zmiinyi Island: Ecosystem of Coastal Waters". Project staff has prepared, presented and published reports at the International Conference on the Black Sea problems in Sofia (Bulgaria) on 6-9 October, 2008, all-Ukrainian scientific & practical conference "Ecology of Cities and Recreation Zones", Odessa, 4-5 June 2009, International Conferences "Ecological Problems of the Black Sea", Odessa, October 2008 and October 2009.
