The structure, phase and elemental composition of hafnium diboride nanostructured films were studied by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy and secondary ion mass spectroscopy. The hardness, elastic and plastic properties of the films were determined. The effect of structure and grains size on the physicomechanical properties of the coatings was observed. Diffusion-like model of growing of surface structure is suggested. The madel simulates dynamic of whisker growing and allows investigate it in dependency from external parameters of deposition, as ion beam density, impact energy, substate temperature.
