Object of research - selection and seed plant material with free and mechanical (meadow) pollination of individual stems of one alfalfa bush. Purpose of research - the creation of new alfalfa varieties suitable for mechanical and machine flower pollination; the testing and improvement of machines for alfalfa pollination; the technology development for alfalfa seed cultivation by machine pollination. Methods of research - artificial pollination without isolation and inbreeding, individual selection. The work on the allocation of alfalfa productive lines, devoid of inbred depression, was conducted on 650 specimens received from the collection of N.I Vavilov Research Institute of Plant Industry. For this purpose one half of a stem of every bush of individual plants was left for free pollination, and the other half was fit out with insulators for manual flower opening by passing underneath for the blossoming duration. Subsequently the evaluation of seed productivity for each half of the bush was conducted. The following conclusions were reached after the research: - It is possible to allocate alfalfa lines that do not have any indication of depression at lease up to the fourth generation when bred by self-pollination. These lines are valuable material for creating synthetic alfalfa variety with high seed productivity when mechanical flower opening is used. - Mechanical pollination conducted manually on Andi variety under equality of other conditions led to the twofold increase of seed mass and seed productivity. - Andi variety has considerable heterogeneity of plants by seed productivity in cases of both natural pollination and manual pollination, which helps carry out the selection for specific purposes successfully. - The trial machine model for mechanical pollination of alfalfa MZL-6 was produced and its trial was conducted, which showed that one-time passing of the machine ensures the opening of unopened flowers in 65.7-76.0% of cases. - MZL-6 machine was delivered to the farm in village Grushky of Mogyliv-Podilskyi region, Vinnytsya oblast. - The stemlifters for T-25 tractor front and back wheels were made.
