Optimal ratios of component concentrations and thermal post-synthesis treatment producing mesoporous TiO2 with a high photocatalytic activity toward oxidation of volatile organic air contaminants (ethanol, acetaldehyde, acetone) have been defined. It has been shown that the photocatalytic activity of the synthesized mesoporous materials in ethanol and acetaldehyde oxidation is substantially higher than that of well-known commercial TiO2 photocatalyst Degussa P25. The protocols of the synthesis of titanate nanotubes via the hydrothermal treatment of titania powders in alcaline solutions have been elaborated, the photocatalytic activity of the tubular materials produced as well as their phase composition and morphology have been studied. A protocol for the synthesis of hollow microspheres with the average size of around 1100 nm using polystyrene latex template has been proposed. The synthesized TiO2 microspheres reveal photocatalytic properties in the gas-phase oxidation of ethanol and acetaldehyde. A series of metal-semiconductor and binary semiconductor composite structures have been prepared on the basis of the mesoporous titania. It has been shown that the utilization of such nanostructures as photocatalysts of the gas-phase oxidation of organic pollutants allows to achieve a substantial reduction in the emission of gaseous intermediates into the gas phase and sensitization of TiO2 to the visible light.
