Studying of dynamics of many particles systems in nematic thermotropic liquid crystals and dynamics of single particle in lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals was the goal of our project. The investigation was carried out using polarizing microscopy, video microscopy, and optical laser tweezers. It was shown that melting of a two-dimensional colloidal system, formed by glycerol droplets at the free surface of a nematic liquid crystalline layer occurs through an intermediate hexatic phase, as predicted by the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young theory. Analyzing Brownian motion of single colloidal particles we obtained dependence of viscosity of the disodium cromoglycate lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal material on temperature within nematic phase. The viscosity of the chromonic liquid crystal material near the clearing point decreases approximately by four times comparing to room temperature. This change is much greater than that for thermotropic liquid crystals and we explain it by shortening of molecular aggregates with temperature increase.
