A laser radiation excitation spectrometer for Rydberg state atoms with high ionization potential has been developed, created and tested. The spectrometer allows one to measure the frequencies of the microwave transitions at these states with an accuracy of a molecular spectroscopy (better than 50-100 kHz) that exceeds the accuracy of traditional optical spectroscopy for several degrees. The spectrometer was thoroughly tested by recording absorption spectra of Cs in microwave region. The results of the performed investigation showed that an unique equipment that exceeds its foreign analogs has been created. For the first time an outline of obtaining of excited atoms of PbI in nS and nD states by 3-step laser excitation has been proposed and implemented. It became possible due to exceptional coincidence between the frequency of the second step of excitation 6p7s(1/2,1/2)1 - 6p7p(1/2,3/2)1 and the frequency of the fundamental harmonic of YAG:Nd3+ laser radiation. For the first time high-quality optical excitation spectra of PbI have been obtained for transitions from 6p7s(1/2,1/2)1 state to Rydberg 6nnp states with revealing of fine structure and varying of the principal quantum number in region 30-70. The transitions observed have been identified. The measurement of life time of atoms in Rydberg state has also been carried out by varying the time delay between the ionization impulse and the laser excitation. An effective outline for silicon atom excitation has been proposed, created and tested. One plans to use the spectrometer for further thoroughly investigations of Rydberg atoms aimed at obtaining valuable results for radioastronomy, radiophysics and instrument engineering.
