Studying of ordered structures of particles in such systems was the goal of our project. The main attention was focused on formation, observation, and description of ordered superstructures in liquid crystal colloid systems, and their behavior and transformation under action of external electric field and investigation of properties of the superstructures on macroscopic scale for photonic application. The investigation was carried out using polarizing microscopy, video microscopy, and optical laser tweezers techniques. It was shown that elastic interaction in binary systems of colloidal particles of same size with different (dipolar and quadrupolar) symmetry of director field around particles and with different anchoring (planar and homeotropic) on surface in nematic liquid crystal allowed us to build two-dimensional binary periodical colloidal lattices of different symmetry and complexity. We have built quasi-two-dimensional colloidal lattice formed by particles with dipolar configuration of director around the surface. It was shown that applying electric field to the cell with the lattice changes its period. Also in thick nematic layer with thickness of six diameters of particles, periodical three-dimensional dipolar colloidal lattice was obtained. The investigated liquid crystal colloidal lattices can help to fabricate materials with new optical properties and with forbidden photonic band gap for advanced photonic devices.
