Aim of research is to study the nature of self-incompatibility, to select perspective initial material and on its basis - high productive varieties with the prolonged period of productive life, increased feed and seed productivity. Methods of research are hybridization, polycross, selection, hybridological analysis, methods of variation statistics. Changeability of the level of self-incompatibility of Lucerne and the character of the inheritance by Lucerne hybrids of the first generation of the given trait and some morphological characteristics are established; the depend-ence of elements of seed productivity of self-incompatible clones depending on the pollination type is revealed. On the basis of generalization of results on the study of the genetic nature of self-incompatibility of Lucerne plants, a method of selection of self-incompatible plants that enables to identify genotypes with 100% display of the level of self-incompatibility during a year providing high efficiency of the breeding process when making varieties-synthetics (patent №17756 of October 16, 2006) has been carried out. Lucerne variety Synyukha was submitted for the state trial (2006), registered in the State Variety Register for 2010 and recommended for cultivation in the zones of Polissya, Forest-Steppe and Steppe. It is characterized by the resistance to soil acidity and drought and increased seed productivity.
