Kavetsky Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology and Radiobiology popup.description2 Nanocomposites of hematoporphyrin and chlorin e6 (well-known photosensitizers for the photodynamic therapy of tumors) with colloidal gold were sinthesized, and their spectral characteristics were investigated. The nanocomposites obtained were shown to efficiently induce the formation of singlet oxygen and free radicals under light irradiation both in model solutions and malignant cells suspensions. In in vitro experiments with human leukemic cells it was established that photodynamic activity of the nanocomposite hematoporphyrin -colloidal gold is 17-20 times higher than for free hematoporphyrin. The better activity of composite porphyrins was also demonstrated in studies on photodynamic therapy of experimental tumors, transplanted in mice - metastasizing Lewis lung carcinoma and non-metastasizing sarcoma 180. The treatment efficiency could be further enhanced by utilization of a fractionated regimen of tumor irradiation instead of continuous.
